5 reasons to rediscover your hometown this summer

A summer reliving the good old days in the Spanish countryside—what’s not to love? Here are five reasons why heading home for the summer is a great idea.

Ah, the humble hometown. For the majority of us, a Spanish countryside village is the backdrop of long summer days past, where we used to run amuck as kids without a care in the world. But what if your forgotten hometown could also be the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday this summer?

Maybe your hometown isn't one of the most beautiful villages in Spain—or perhaps it is. It all depends on how you look at it. Here are our top five reasons why revisiting your hometown can make your summer holiday as adventurous and enjoyable as an episode of "Verano Azul", the classic Spanish TV series.

1. Remember the good old times

Do you remember the narrow streets of your hometown, where you knew what was behind every corner? Perhaps it was your childhood best friend's house, your favorite corner bar, or the town square where the gang used to meet. I'm sure the faded memories are coming back, but there's nothing like a walk around the area to jog your memory. It might not be the same as it was back then, but the familiar sights and smells will kickstart the sweet nostalgia. Maybe you’ll even see things from a different perspective, or notice something that you hadn’t before.

2. Catch up with your childhood friends

If your hometown was a place strictly reserved for family visits in the summer or a quick trip during Christmas time, there’s bound to be some childhood friends around who you haven't seen in a while. Seeing each other again after a long time is sure to lead to a fun trip down memory lane.

Or even better, why not get in touch with the whole gang and create new memories to last a lifetime? If the comedy TV series "Los Hombres de Paco" can come back after 15 years, getting a couple of friends together to catch up can't be that complicated.

3. The ideal place for social distancing

Could there be a better place to get away from the craziness of the city than your hometown? No matter how big your hometown felt when you were growing up, there’s sure to be less people in the rural countryside than in the major cities. Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind, and go back to where it all began.

4. Reconnect with nature

Wherever in Spain you come from, there’s always a beach, mountain, or even a scenic lookout that’s a local favorite. What’s a countryside getaway without open fields of fresh air, and much-needed peace and quiet? After spending so many days in quarantine, getting in touch with Mother Nature in her full bloom is the best way to refresh your mind, body and spirit.

Find a scenic route through the area and get going on your feet, your bike, or whatever else you prefer. Some exercise, beautiful nature, loads of fresh air and something new to discover—now that doesn't sound bad at all.

5. Gain extra savings

If the reasons so far haven't convinced you yet, maybe you need a concrete reason, one that you can feel in your hands—literally. Like for example, all the euros you're going to save and stash away under your mattress.

The price of a "menu of the day" at the roadhouse bar is considerably cheaper than a meal at a beachfront terrace. Besides, all those flavours that’ll transport you right back to your childhood? Absolutely priceless.
