Whether you’re a die-hard believer in the zodiac or an astrology skeptic, there can be something fascinating about zodiac archetypes and their characteristics. If you start reading about astrology, you might discover different star signs, rising signs — and perhaps eerily accurate personality profiles.

Every month in the Zodiac x N26 series, we’ll explore character traits associated with the various signs and explore how these might relate to money-management. This month, we’re looking at Aquarius. Let’s go!

The Aquarius star sign

The Aquarius star sign comes from the constellation of the same name. It’s one of the oldest known constellations in the night sky — it made an appearance in the records of Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy as early as the 2nd century CE.

Aquarius is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the biggest constellations, covering 2% of the entire night sky at 980 square degrees. Between August and November is the best time to observe this constellation.

The name Aquarius probably has its origins in Greek mythology. The story goes that Zeus was struck by Cupid’s arrow while watching a little boy on earth. Zeus abducted the boy, a Trojan prince named Ganymede, carried him off to Mount Olympus, and made him immortal. From then on, Ganymede worked as a cupbearer or water carrier for the gods. The symbol of this star sign is often a simplified representation of waves, a water pitcher, or a man holding a water pitcher.

Which traits are associated with Aquarius?

Aquarius is the 11th of the 12 star signs, starting on January 21 and ending on February 19. Like the star signs of Leo, Taurus, and Scorpio, Aquarius is one of the fixed star signs, which means that Aquarians tend to be creatures of habit who value routine. At the same time, they’re also known as proactive people who are good at achieving their goals. Although it may seem counterintuitive, Aquarius' element is air — not water. Since people born in Aquarius are thought to be pretty analytical and unemotional by nature, the element of air is more fitting for this star sign than water. That’s because water signs are considered to be particularly emotional.

This sign is ruled by the planets Uranus and Saturn. While Uranus stands for change, revolution, and transformation, Saturn responds with reliability, a sense of responsibility, and conscientiousness, keeping Aquarius in balance.

Aquarius characteristics and personality

According to astrology, Aquarians have several special qualities. Like their element of air, Aquarians often have a strong need for freedom and independence, and it isn’t easy to fit them into a particular box. People with this star sign are usually known for being full of creativity, individuality, helpfulness, and an innovative spirit. Aquarians often have an analytical way of thinking, coupled with a penchant for unconventional ideas. Many Aquarians come across as idealistic visionaries.

Some consider Aquarius to be the rebel among the star signs. Their relatively sociable streak can switch to a chilly aloofness in an instant. Rarely predictable, Aquarians' temperament tends to be erratic and can change rapidly, especially in situations that need an extra dose of patience. People born under this star sign are also said to have a fear of commitment and a tendency to avoid emotional situations or outbursts of feeling.

Aquarius and money-management

Now that we know more about the Aquarius star sign, let’s look at how these personality traits might affect them when it comes to money.

How do Aquarians deal with money?

With their talent for analytical thinking and good head for numbers, most Aquarians find it relatively easy to keep track of their finances. However, people with this star sign see money not as a symbol of power, but as a means to live their life the way they want it. As they see it, money comes and goes, so Aquarians prioritize other things instead of their finances. Their helpful streak also makes them more likely to focus on humanitarian crises than their personal bank balance.

Although Aquarians tend to be relaxed when it comes to money, they’re also prone to impulsive actions. The chaotic side of the planet Uranus, which rules Aquarius, sometimes tempts this star sign into excessive spending sprees, while Saturn’s influence pushes Aquarius to budget and save.

Although Aquarians’ analytical mindset and intellect could give them a knack for investing, their indecisiveness can get in the way. This can prevent them from investing their money or making tough decisions about their savings goals and wealth. However, if Aquarians have a specific savings goal in mind, they’re usually able to pursue it in a purposeful way.
