5 must-see destinations in northern Spain: eat, surf and camp
Thinking about what to visit in the North of Spain? Here are a few recommendations to help you lose your bearings by surfing, eating like there is no tomorrow and sleeping under the stars.

When we think about travelling, especially in summer, we usually dream of exotic and faraway destinations. If possible, with a sunny, hot climate and the beach nearby. Can you imagine? Well, you don't have to go very far to find it.
However, the heat and the sun are not 100% guaranteed more like a cool breeze and a sweatshirt at night. What is guaranteed are the paradisiacal beaches, and not too crowded, which is not bad at this time of year. And you will also find tasty food to fill your stomach and, if you dare, some good waves to surf on. Sound familiar? I'm sure it does, basically because you've read the title.
We are pleased to introduce you to 5 corners to make your own route through the north of Spain. And as always: good, nice and cheap, and supporting national tourism.
Southern Galicia - Galifornia
A paradise for your eyes and a pleasure for your stomach. There is little to say about Galician gastronomy, neither about its beaches nor its landscapes. They don't call it "Galifornia" for nothing. You won't find palm trees, but you will find very good waves to dust off your board and an accent that makes you fall in love.
Our recommendation:
- Camping Muiñeira
- Praia das Furnas
- Playa del Río Sieira
- Playa de Patos

Northern Galicia - Costa da Morte
In this northern area, where the wind and tides come together to offer you the best waves, you can find everything from unspoilt beaches to what you would expect from an urban beach with all its facilities. You simply have to choose what you want. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
You should visit:
- Playa de Peñarredonda
- Playa de Cueva
- Playón de Bayas
- Playa de Rodiles
- Playa de Xagó
- Playa de Vega
Asturias - The Green Coast
In Asturias, the colour green takes on a new meaning. Sea and mountains less than an hour away, traditional gastronomy to avoid hunger and an infinite number of trekking routes suitable for all levels, from the Cantabrian coast to the Picos de Europa. In the land of Pelayo and Covadonga you will taste a real cachopo (one of those that overflows on the plate) or a good fabada. But do it after surfing, because there is no known human being who has survived without a nap after such a feast.
Our recommendation:
- Playa de Peñarredonda
- Playa de Cueva
- Playón de Bayas
- Playa de Rodiles
- Playa de Xagó
- Playa de Vega
Cantabria - El Capricho
"Cantabria infinita" for outsiders or "la tierruca" for locals. A paradise of kilometric beaches, fine sand and dunes. And that's not all. El Capricho in Comillas, also known as Villa Quijano, is one of the first and most unknown works of a young Gaudí, with a particular style influenced by oriental art and Arabic architecture. You can even find one of the best prehistoric art caves in all of Europe: Altamira. It dates from 35,000 to 11,000 BC.
Our recommendation:
- Playa de Somo y Loredo
- Playa de Langre
- Dunas de Liencres
- Playa de Oyambre
- Playa de Pedrezo
- Playa de Ajo
Basque Country - Ortzimuga
"Ortzimuga" is the Basque translation of "horizon" and is a combination of the words "edge of the sky". As a pleasant surprise, that's what you'll take with you when you get to know the corners of this land. Let yourself be surprised by unique gastronomy or enter the world of Game of Thrones. The Basque Country has so much to offer that it would be unfair to describe it in just a few lines.
Our recommendation:
- San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (visit Dragonstone, for real!)
- Mundaka
- Playa de Orrúa
- Playa de Gaztetape, Getaria

Eat, surf and camp
Every recommendation is based on entirely subjective criteria. The best way to know if they are worthwhile or not is to experience them first-hand. Remember that in all the beaches we have suggested you can surf and camp. It all depends on availability and tides, of course. Now it's up to you to decide where you want to go. Northern Spain is waiting for you with open arms.
