What’s included

Get a Spanish IBAN, a free virtual Mastercard (a physical card can be shipped for €10), ATM withdrawals and deposits, and SEPA transfers (conditions apply) — all in the N26 app. Legally guaranteed for EU residents, the Basic Payment Account is completely free for people experiencing economic vulnerability.

How to open a Basic Payment Account

  1. Download and sign the application and self-declaration forms.
  2. Mail the originals (plus vulnerability proof, if applicable) to: N26 Bank, C/ Don Ramón de la Cruz 84, 28006 Madrid.
  3. Once reviewed, we’ll email you to schedule your in-person verification appointment in our offices.

FAQ

  • You’re eligible as long as you do not hold another payment account in Spain and you meet one of these requirements: you legally reside in the European Union (even if you do not have a fixed address), you are an asylum seeker, or cannot be deported for legal or factual reasons even if you don’t have a residence permit. If you meet those legal requirements, all you need is a compatible smartphone and a supported ID to get started.
  • Along with an email address you’ll need a valid, government-issued photo ID — such as your passport, EU national identity card, or official Spanish residence document. You’ll also need to fill out the Basic Payment Account application form here and a self-declaration here confirming that you don't already hold another payment account in Spain. If you’re applying for the free (€0/month) account due to economic¹ vulnerability, you’ll also need to provide a document proving your situation. This can be an income tax return, a certificate of unemployment, or proof of social subsidies.
  • No. You can open a Basic Payment Account without having to pay for any other N26 products or services.
  • The account is free to open and you’ll pay no monthly fees for a Basic Payment Account. ATM withdrawals in euros are also free. However, some account functions are subject to fees:
    • ATM withdrawals in euros: €0 pero withdrawal²
    • ATM withdrawals in other currencies: 1.7% of the withdrawn amount
    • CASH26 deposits: 1.5% of the deposited amount
    • CASH26 withdrawals: €2 per withdrawal
    • Direct debit rejection due to insufficient funds: €9
    • Request and shipment of a replacement card: €10
    • Request and express shipment of a replacement card: €30

If you need to file a formal complaint, you can reach our Complaints team at reclamaciones.es@n26.com or by mail: N26 Bank SE, Sucursal en España, Servicio de Reclamaciones, C/ de Don Ramón de la Cruz, 84, 28006 Madrid. If you’re not satisfied with our final resolution, you can escalate your claim directly to the Complaints Service of the Bank of Spain (Banco de España).
  • The N26 Basic Payment Account includes essential banking services to help you manage your finances. You’ll receive a free virtual N26 Mastercard debit card with no maintenance fee. If you’d like a physical Mastercard debit card, you can order one for €10 standard shipping or for €30 express shipping. You can access your account directly through the N26 app or my.n26.com, make free SEPA and instant money transfers, set up direct debits free of charge, withdraw cash from ATMs, and deposit money via bank transfer. You are not required to pay for any other products or services from N26 to open the account.
