Unlike a physical SIM card, which you'd need to insert into your phone to connect to a mobile network, an eSIM is digital — and therefore already built into your phone. This means you can activate or change your eSIM digitally without changing a physical chip.
After you pick your N26 SIM plan and agree to the conditions, tap 'Subscribe to N26 SIM.' A new page will open. Tap 'Install eSIM' on this new page to start setting up your device.
If you quit the installation, you can restart it later in the 'N26 SIM' part of your app. To find it, select your avatar in the top right corner of the Home tab of your N26 app, then choose 'N26 SIM'. There, tap the 'Install' button to restart the installation process.
Yes, you can transfer an existing phone number from your previous mobile service provider to your N26 SIM plan. Follow the 'phone number transfer' instructions when you set up your N26 SIM and make sure to contact your current provider and ask them to approve the number transfer (also known as "opting in"). Here is a list of the most common mobile providers.
Yes, you need an N26 bank account to get an N26 SIM plan.
To check if your phone is compatible with an eSIM, open your phone’s settings, then choose ‘mobile service’ or ‘about phone’ to find the SIM management information. For reference, iPhone XR and later (including iPhone SE 2nd gen and later) support eSIM. For Android phones, many Samsung models (such as Galaxy S20 and later), Google Pixel (Pixel 3 and later), and other brands offer eSIM support.
All N26 SIM plans come with unlimited calls and SMS within Germany, and free roaming within the EU/EEA. When traveling outside of the EU/EEA, international roaming charges will apply. You can view the price list for roaming here.
In general, eSIMs are more secure than physical SIM cards because they cannot be removed or stolen, reducing the risk of theft or unauthorized transfers. They offer better protection against SIM swapping fraud and are encrypted for secure remote management. Unlike physical SIMs, eSIMs are built into the device, making them harder to tamper with or clone.
You can cancel your N26 SIM plan on a monthly basis. Currently, upgrading or downgrading your plan isn't possible. However, if you cancel and decide to resubscribe within 90 days, you can pick a new plan while keeping the same phone number.
All N26 SIM plans include free calls and text messages in Germany. The Small plan gives you 10 GB of data per month. The Medium plan gives you 30 GB of data per month. The Large plan gives you 100 GB of data per month. All plans include roaming within the EU.
You will receive your N26 SIM invoice via secure inbox message on the 1st each month. The invoice will show the fixed monthly N26 SIM plan fee and the variable fees (ie. for international calls, SMS and roaming), if occurred during the month. The fees which appear on the invoice will be charged to your N26 account on the 5th of each month, covering usage from the previous month. For more details regarding international fees, see here.
