Shared banking – the evolution of Spaces

Some of our N26 customers will have already tried Spaces, a feature that lets you create a sub-account known as a “space”. Once created you can transfer money between your main account and your space. Shared Spaces is an added functionality for premium account users which lets you invite up to 10 participants into a space to manage the funds collectively.


Create your shared space in a few taps

N26 You, Metal and Business You customers have the ability to create Shared Spaces! It's easy. Head to the Spaces area of your app (the 'four squares' icon), create a new space or open an existing one, and click “add participants”. Then invite friends and family with an N26 account to join.

Shared account banking with the ones you trust

Only N26 premium account holders can create a shared space, but any N26 account holder can be invited to participate. Just remember that by inviting others to join your space, you’ll be giving them what’s called ‘Power of Attorney’. This gives them full access to all the money held within that shared space, so you should only invite people to join who you know and trust.

What is Shared Spaces?

Shared Spaces is a new shared sub-accounts banking feature that sits within N26 Spaces, accessible via the N26 app and web app. It lets you create a sub-account and share it with up to 10 other N26 users. Shared Spaces lets you invite your partner, friends, roommates and family as a participant to add and spend together from the same Spaces sub-account. Each participant can easily transfer money between the shared space and their own N26 account, and even keep track of all transaction activities just by viewing the space details.

Who owns the money in Shared Spaces?

In order for multiple users to have full access to the same sub-account and the money within it, Shared Spaces uses a Power of Attorney legal model. This means that the person who originally created the shared space is the sole owner of the space, but they are granting ‘Power of Attorney’ to the other participants which lets them transfer money in and out. This is all explained in the “Terms of Use” screen which the owner of the space will see before they invite other users to join, and can also be found when a participant has accepted an invitation to join. How do I open a Shared Space?

  • Create a space as normal with a name, image and goal amount
  • Click ‘add new participant’ in the space settings and follow the steps on screen to send an invitation to a N26 user with their visibility switched on
  • Once they accept your invitation to join the space, the new participant will be allowed to transfer money in and out of the space
  • That’s it! Start reaching those savings goals together

Can you open a Shared Space without the other person being present?

Yes, absolutely! The beauty of Shared Spaces is that it’s all managed through each individual’s N26 account. Create a shared space and invite up to 10 other participants at any time. They’ll receive a notification of your invitation, and once they confirm or decline the invite, you’ll receive notification of this from N26.

How to remove someone from Shared Spaces?

Since the owner of the shared space grants Power of Attorney to the other participants, they are the only one who can add or remove participants from that space. To do so, head to the shared space, open the space details and you will see a list of participants in that space. Click on the name of the participant you wish to remove and confirm.

What do I need to open a Shared Space?

Any N26 user with their visibility switched on (this is controllable in the app) can be invited to join and participate in a shared space. However, only N26 premium account holders with either N26 You, N26 Business You or N26 Metal can create a new shared space.

What is the difference between a joint bank account and N26 Shared Spaces?

With a traditional joint account, the two people who open the account do this together, and then have legal equal ownership of it. The difference with Shared Spaces is that the N26 premium user who creates the space is the sole owner of the space and anyone who they invite to join is merely being given ‘Power of Attorney’ which allows them to access and/or contribute to the funds within that space.

Shared Spaces is the perfect solution for those looking for a simple, flexible and secure solution for handling a collective pool of money. Whereas joint accounts are often limited to just 2 people, N26 premium customers can create up to 10 Shared Spaces, invite up to 10 participants per space, and remove participants at any time. How can I become visible so that I can participate in a Space?

You can do this directly in your N26 app. Go to the My Account section, open Settings, then tap on Personal Settings. Click on Personal Information and tick the box to confirm that you agree to be identifiable to other N26 users.
