Senior Investigator - AFC Sanctions

About the opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Investigator - AFC Sanctions professional to join our team in Berlin. AFC Sanctions is responsible for implementing at a Group level the international Financial Sanctions and global risk management framework to meet legal, regulatory and N26 Policy requirements. The team participates in the review and investigation linked to sanctions findings, escalating cases, where appropriate, to the Group Head of Sanctions and MLROs. The team is responsible for monitoring regulations and legislations, owning and maintaining N26 Sanctions policies and procedures, as well as advising internal and external stakeholders on sanctions risks. This requires constant collaboration with the technology team in charge of developing and optimizing solutions, as well as contributing to the Group-wide Risk Assessment.

In this role, you will:

  • Review investigations for cases escalated by the Operations Sanctions Screening department, using internal and external research tools in order to assess and determine potential sanctions risks.
  • Review possible violations of sanctions or export controls laws, regulations or Group Sanctions Policy as to contain the Bank's risk and escalate these cases as per the procedures in place.
  • Recommend appropriate measures to local MLROs when an ancillary financial crime risk or reporting is deemed required.
  • Work closely with the Head of Sanctions on revising and implementing updates to sanctions policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Support the Head of Sanctions in conducting the annual sanctions risk assessment.
  • Help in reviewing quality assurance and audit findings.
  • Conduct effective and timely review of investigations into assigned cases in accordance with agreed standard reporting requirements and service levels.
  • Ensure that investigations undertaken adhere to the N26 AFC’s Global Standards, Policies and Procedures.
  • Process requests from other departments as required.

What you need to be successful:

  • University degree in Business, Law or Economics. Any related field can also be considered.
  • 2-4 years of experience in sanctions compliance, AML, or financial crime investigations.
  • Good knowledge of the sanctions compliance regulatory landscape with some experience dealing with EU, UN and any or all of the US and UK administered sanctions regulations.
  • Good understanding of banking compliance regulations and banking products.
  • Understanding of processes used to screen and review customers’ activity.
  • Good investigation skills through the use of available internal as well as open sources.
  • Fluency in English is required (verbal and written). Given the global nature of our investigations, the ability to speak or read Russian, Arabic, or Farsi is a strong plus.
  • Ability to work in an everchanging regulatory environment.
  • Good report writing skills for documenting findings.
  • Relevant knowledge of other Financial Crime (FC) areas in order to identify any applicable FC risks (other than sanctions) that are worth referring internally to the relevant AFC department.
