5 far-flung winter sun spots to consider for your next break
It’s time to spread your wings. Think bigger than the Costa Del Sol this winter with our five super sun spots.

Short getaways close to home are great, but sometimes you want to explore somewhere a little more exotic—we’re talking Caribbean islands, tropical shores and more. Here are five sunny delights that you may not have considered that will get you dreaming about your big winter getaway.
1. Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean
South of the equator, our winter is Sri Lanka’s summer. And while the island has plenty of idyllic sandy beaches to relax on, this South Asian gem is much more than a chill-out destination. Head to Uda Walawe National Park and watch the elephants or try meditating at the ancient Mulkirigala Rock Temples. If you’re looking for a little more hustle and bustle, pay a visit to the capital of Columbo for some culture and history.

2. Saint Martin, The Caribbean
Or as it’s known on the Dutch side of the Island ‘Sint Maarten.’ This beautiful Caribbean island has been heavily shaped by its colonial past and is literally divided up between France and the Netherlands. Head to the quieter French side for croissants and Parisian boutiques, or venture to the colourful Dutch capital of Philipsburg for cobbled streets and pretty, gabled houses. Despite its European influences, the sunshine, rum and hot guava sauce never leaves you doubting that you’re in the Carribean.
3. Florida, USA
It’s called the Sunshine State for a reason. Florida is home to some of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders that can be enjoyed all year round. Watch monarch butterflies migrate along the Gulf Island’s National Seashore, or explore the coral colonies found on Singer Island. If you’re more of a city slicker, check out Miami’s party scene from one of its streamlined, candy-coloured hotels.
4. Florianopolis, Brazil
500 miles from the party in Rio, you’ll find Florianópolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina. With 40 beaches to choose from, incredibly fresh seafood and a huge range of watersports available, this safe Brazilian hub is the ideal winter getaway. Whilst the flight may set you back more than some closer destinations, once you arrive in ‘Floripa’ (as the locals say) you’ll find it very affordable.
5. Madagascar, Indian Ocean
This island off the East coast of Africa is famous for its glorious flora and fauna notably, stripy lemurs, chameleons, stunning orchids and the mighty baobab trees. The coastline is beautiful too, with pristine beaches where you might even spot a whale or a turtle. If you fancy a trip inland, make a visit to The Tsingy de Bemarah or ‘the stony forest,’ as it’s sometimes referred to. This other-wordly landscape of limestone rock formations is so unique, it was the first region on the island to be designated a UNSECO World Heritage Site.
