The N26 history

2013

N26 was founded in 2013 by Valentin Stalf and Maximilian Tayenthal—reimagining the retail banking experience for today’s mobile lifestyle.

2015

Since the initial product launch in 2015, over 1 Million customers across 17 European markets have signed up for N26—with plans to enter the US and the UK in 2018.

2018

The firm has raised a total of USD 215 million from some of the world’s most well-known investors, including Allianz X, Tencent Holdings Limited, Li Ka-Shing’s Horizons Ventures, Valar Ventures, members of the Zalando Management Team, and Earlybird Venture Capital. N26 employs more than 430 people and has offices in Berlin and New York.


Our Management Team

Valentin Stalf: Founder and CEO

Born in Vienna, Valentin studied accounting & finance (M.A. HSG) at the University of St. Gallen, Sophia University in Tokyo, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration. During his studies he worked in a number of fields including strategy consulting (Roland Berger) and investment banking/mergers & acquisition (Deutsche Bank). After graduating, Valentin worked for Rocket Internet as Entrepreneur in Residence and was involved in building different companies before founding N26, the leading mobile bank in Europe, together with Maximilian Tayenthal in 2013 in Berlin.

Maximilian Tayenthal: Founder and CFO

Maximilian, born in Vienna, studied Business Administration, International Management and Law in Vienna, Rotterdam and Paris. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. He worked as a strategy consultant with Booz & Company as well as the assistant to the CFO in an Austria's largest insurance company and gained experiences in Corporate/M&A in a law firm before he founded N26, the leading mobile Bank in Europa, together with Valentin Stalf in 2013.

Markus Gunter: CEO N26 Bank

Markus studied Business Administration after finishing a banking apprenticeship. He pioneered the first internet platform of the German bank HYPO-BANK AG. As managing director of Activest and Pioneer Investments, he built the company up to be one of the top five asset management companies in Germany. While working as CEO of stock exchange listed DAB Bank AG, Markus realized that mobile banking is a superior solution to financial services, he then joined N26 Bank as its CEO.

Matthias Oetken: CFO/CRO N26 Bank

Matthias Oetken was trained as a banker at Commerzbank before studying Business in Göttingen. Afterwards he worked as a risk and portfolio management expert for several banks such as Nord/LB, LB Kiel and HSH Nordbank AG with stations in Germany, Luxembourg and UK. Before joining N26 Bank, he was responsible for building up the spin-off HSH Financial Markets Advisory S.A. as CFO / CEO.

Matteo Concas: General Manager Italy

Matteo is General Manager Italy at N26, the mobile bank leader in Europe. Born in Sardinia, he started his career in Management Consulting in Italy before moving to Investment Banking Mergers & Acquisitions in London at JP Morgan and later at Zaoui & Co, advising Technology and Media companies like Alcatel-Lucent on its combination with Nokia, Manchester United on its initial public offering, and Nokia on the sale of its Devices & Services business to Microsoft. He holds a Master in Management from the ESCP Europe Business School in Paris and a Bachelor in Business Administration from the University of Turin.
