Online banking gives you access to your money conveniently from wherever you might be, making life easier and more comfortable. However, in light of recent global developments surrounding coronavirus, being able to manage your finances from home has become a necessity. Online banking provides an extra layer of protection, reducing risk by minimizing the need for in-person contact when making payments and performing basic banking operations.

At N26, we are taking the necessary steps to keep you and your family safe. We are also doing everything in our power to make sure our banking and customer service capabilities remain uninterrupted and ready to support you in these uncertain times. To do so, we are closely following guidance from the CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), and local health authorities to prioritize the health and safety of our customers and employees.

Apart from encouraging you to continue practicing good hygiene – washing your hands thoroughly and staying home when possible – we’d like to provide you with some helpful advice for the upcoming weeks:

Stay home when possible

The coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the United States, disrupting the routines of the entire population. We are aware of the tremendous sacrifices that everyone is making by giving up social, professional and human interactions and obligations. We feel the inconvenience of all the canceled trips, postponed plans, closed restaurants, and the frustration that can come from being confined to your home, but we want to remind you that we’re all in this together. If you feel lonely, call a friend or relative, but please stay home when possible. We do want to acknowledge those that don’t have this ability, and thank all of the health workers and everyone else who is working tirelessly to help in these times of crisis.

Shop online

Given the current climate, a good option to consider is to start doing most of your shopping online, rather than in stores. This means avoiding crowds, and not having to come into contact with contaminated surfaces as the entire transaction is handled digitally. This is especially important when observing social distancing practices, or in the unfortunate event that a “shelter in place” advisory came into effect where you live.

Handle cash carefully

To reinforce the importance of good hygiene during the COVID-19 outbreak, health experts have recommended that people be more mindful of how they handle physical currency. While there is no immediate concern that cash itself specifically spreads the coronavirus, paper money is known to be especially dirty. While the primary form of transmission is believed to be primarily person-to-person, the World Health Organization has recommended washing your hands thoroughly after handling money as a “good hygiene practice.”

When possible, consider using contactless payments like Apple Pay® to make in-person purchases. Should you need to access cash, our ATM map in the “Actions” tab of the N26 app can help you find the nearest location out of over 55,000 fee-free Allpoint ATMs. Remember that with your N26 card, we will also reimburse all fees for 2 additional out-of-network withdrawals per month from any ATM in the U.S.

Beware of scams

As is the unfortunate case with emergencies, there are fraudsters attempting to take advantage of the current coronavirus situation. Now more than ever, we recommend being particularly vigilant for fraud attempts. If you detect any type of suspicious communication – calls, emails, or texts pretending to be your bank, or find any last-minute investment offers or too-good-to-be-true bargains, be careful.

And If you have been a victim of malicious activity that impacts your N26 account, don’t hesitate to contact us or visit our security page.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Whether a trip has been canceled or you’ve decided not to risk traveling, we recommend that you contact your airline, hotel, and insurance company to get first-hand advice on your options. The most common solution is to postpone the trip or even to get a refund. Know that many companies are doing their best to adjust to the current situation, and they often want to work with you to find a solution that best fits your needs.

We know these are uncertain and scary times, and we want to assure you that we’re here for you. Be sure to go to our blog regularly to keep up with the latest N26 updates and news. And above all, stay safe!
