2019 has been an incredible year at N26. From our US launch, to a brand new office, here are noteworthy highlights and meaningful moments of the year.

Oh, how time flies.
2019 has been an incredible year at N26. Not only did it mark the official start of our journey in the US, but it has been filled with exciting product releases, a bold flagship brand campaign, thousands of new customers, and a growing global footprint. From the very beginning we set out with the ambitious goal to create mobile banking that will allow people to live and bank their way, and have been working tirelessly from day one to make this happen. We’re energized by this mission and inspired by the road ahead.
As we wrap up the year and look towards all we have planned for 2020, we wanted to take a moment to stop, smell the roses, and look at some of the most meaningful and noteworthy moments of 2019.
Launching in the US
By far the biggest milestone of the year came this summer with our official launch in the US. This huge undertaking had been years in the making, and the result of long days, late nights, tireless work from our global team, and countless cups of coffee.
After opening our waitlist to some of our most enthusiastic fans, we publicly announced our arrival to the US with a banking app focused on transparency, speed, design, and simplicity.
"We're very excited to bring our experience to US customers,” shared N26 US CEO, Nic Kopp, prior to the launch. “We will eliminate the frustration of visiting branches, waiting on the phone, and paying fees for basic services that should already be included with a bank account."
26 countries, 4 homes
2019 has been a big growth year for N26. After a successful US debut, we announced our launch in Switzerland — officially our 26th market worldwide. Entering this largely traditional financial hub was a special win for students, frequent Eurozone travelers, and anyone looking for a stress-free way to manage their money from the central European country. A few months later we also celebrated the opening of our latest Tech Hub in Vienna. Joining our Berlin, Barcelona, and NYC offices, this location allows us to strengthen our global and product teams, and develop state-of-the-art data-driven security systems for our customers worldwide.
We are nothing without our community, and reaching a milestone as significant as our first thousand customers was something we wanted to celebrate. After all, it was thanks to their feedback and enthusiasm that we were able to prioritize important features like giving you more ways to fund your account or more robust ATM tools for stress-free access to your cash. To say thanks for their thoughtful feedback, and to continue fostering our community, we sent our first 1,000 active users a special token of our thanks. While our community has grown quite a bit, we are very much committed to continue driving innovation for months and years to come with the help of our incredible N26 customers.
Our first US brand campaign
Our first brand campaign in the US was a special and important moment for us. Not only was it an opportunity to introduce ourselves to a new and exciting market, but it was a way to share with America why 3.5 million customers around the world love banking with N26. The campaign highlights our vision for banking that is transparent, fast, and secure; banking that lets you reach your goals, find peace of mind, and get access to your money earlier.
Our “Loved for” campaign was a massive multi-channel effort that spanned social media, email, and a striking out of home campaign with iconic placements around New York City, including the NY subway, which sees an average of nearly 5.5 million riders each day, the Flatiron Building, Penn Station, and more with similar efforts in San Francisco, and Chicago.
A debit card with Perks
Launching a flagship Perks program that our customers would love to use seemed like a no-brainer: a great way to empower you to live and bank your way by offering exclusive discounts and cashback offers from brands you love. We partnered with Lime, Headspace, Booking.com, Tidal, Babbel, and more to help you save money on subscriptions and services you love. Our latest Perks iteration went live in December, and is available to all N26 customers in the US. Read more here, and unlock exclusive offers and partner discounts right from our app.
Free ATMs whenever you need them
We believe banking shouldn’t be restrictive or complicated. To allow you to live a life without limits (and avoid those annoying ATM fees), we announced fee-free withdrawals at over 55,000 Allpoint ATMs conveniently located across the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the UK. This on top of 2 free out-of-network withdrawals each month with your N26 card, means that you have access to your money whenever and wherever you need it.
Home is where the heart is
In 2019 we underwent a few workspace upgrades. As our team continued to grow, we had to say goodbye to our cozy, 5-person windowless office and settle into something a little more spacious. “With the first office you could very much tell this was a tiny project,” shared Foti Hatzis, Tech Lead in the US. “It was literally a room with four to five desks and no windows. The only view we had was more offices. Everyone shared desks and my deskmate was a column.”
A couple coworking spaces and almost 75 employees later, we’re welcoming 2020 in a larger space with a view in the heart of downtown Manhattan. “It’s so much open space” says Foti, “we have our logo and name on the door. I think for me that was the coolest part, coming up the elevator, turning the corner and there’s this beautiful blue door with the logo just shining behind it.”
Series D funding
2019 started off on a high note, as we closed our Series D round with a staggering $300 million in funding. This sum was one of the largest figures recorded for a European fintech company in recent years, and allowed us to focus on developing innovative products and features to make banking smoother, smarter, and more intuitive than before. This latest investment round also saw two new investors supporting our vision: Insight Venture Partners and Singapore’s GIC. This investment has also allowed us to support our growth strategy and mission to create a forward-thinking banking solution that addresses the unique challenges that people face in the US and around the world.
Send money at the blink of an eye
Paying back friends and family with an N26 account became easier than ever with MoneyBeam. We released this product in the fall, based on feedback from our early customers, to provide a fast, seamless way to send and receive money to and from your contacts or even fund your account for the first time. We understand that money is social, and we want to make sending, requesting, and receiving money as easy and seamless as sharing something on Facebook or Instagram.
