But what does that mean, exactly? How does FDIC insurance work—and why is it important?
What is FDIC insurance?
FDIC stands for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. It’s an independent agency of the U.S. government that protects the money that you deposit at FDIC-insured banks. If a bank has FDIC insurance coverage, it means that even if it fails—you won’t lose any of your money.
The federal government established the FDIC after the Great Depression, an era when dozens of banks collapsed and many people lost their deposits. But that can never happen again, as long as you choose FDIC-insured partners for your banking. You can trust FDIC-insured banks and feel confident that the money you deposit is safe.
How does FDIC insurance work?
Every FDIC-insured bank pays a premium (a set amount of money) to the FDIC. The amount depends on how many customers a bank has and how much money they have deposited.
In return for the premium, the FDIC promises to cover any deposits that might be lost if the bank fails—and it’s all backed by the U.S. government. So if your FDIC-insured bank happens to fail, the FDIC would step in to repay you the full amount of the money that you had deposited (up to $250,000).
Since the creation of the FDIC in 1933, not one penny of FDIC-insured deposits has been lost.
