You’ll also receive push notifications with instant alerts on all account activity.

Debit cards give you freedom and convenience, but no matter how careful you are, fraud is an unfortunate reality some of us might face. However, there are things you can do to educate yourself about how debit card fraud happens and what you can do to protect yourself.

What is debit card fraud?

Debit card fraud is a crime that occurs when someone obtains access to your debit card information and uses it to make purchases or ATM withdrawals without your permission. Scammers are resourceful, and have come up with many ways to get your debit card information including:

  • Stealing your physical debit card

  • Tricking you into sharing your card’s information

  • Hacking establishments where you’ve used your card, like a restaurant or shop

  • “Skimming” the data off your card’s magnetic strip with fake card readers

  • Using your information to make a counterfeit card

How do I avoid debit card fraud?

You can help keep fraudsters out out by taking a few precautions:

Monitor your account frequently – With N26’s instant notifications you’ll receive push notifications in real-time on all account activity, including purchases, deposits, and withdrawals. If anything seems out of the ordinary (like a purchase you don’t recognize), you can lock your card instantly using the N26 app.

Keep your debit card in a safe place – If it’s ever stolen, lock your card in the app and let us know right away.

Be careful about where you store your card number and PIN – Writing sensitive information in notes, emails, and anywhere not secured else is a bad idea.

Pay attention when online shopping – Websites that ask for your card information should be secure, and include elements like “https” in the address bar and a padlock icon nearby.

Use an FDIC-insured debit card – which protects your deposits up to $250,000 in case of bank failure. N26 debit cards are FDIC-insured through Axos Bank.

Beware of phishing attacks – Phishing scams attempt to trick you into revealing sensitive information, like your debit card info by pretending to be legitimate communications. They often contact you via email, text, phone, or a fake website. Discover how to protect yourself from phishing.

What do I do if I suspect a fraudulent transaction on my N26 account?

If you see an unfamiliar transaction or one that you’re sure you didn’t authorize, first of all, don’t panic — we’ve got your back. But you do need to act quickly:

  1. Block your debit card using the N26 app to prevent any further transactions.

  2. Contact N26 right away. Chat with us through the N26 app or call us at 1-888-N26-0-N26 (1-888-626-0626). We’ll help you sort everything out

  3. Order a new debit card and report your current card as stolen. Destroy your existing debit card if you still have it by cutting it up with scissors or a shredder. The chip, NFC antenna, and magnetic strip should all be cut into pieces and disposed of separately.

The N26 app makes it easy to keep tabs on your money, giving you full control over your account activity.
