For years, money has been considered to be a taboo topic. We’re hoping to change that.

We recently surveyed over 10,000 individuals across the U.S. and Europe to learn more about your long-term savings goals, what unanswered questions you have around banking, and how your day-to-day spending habits have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. And we learned a lot.

We found that money issues have become one of the biggest concerns for people, and in the U.S. specifically, almost 75% of Americans chose a negative phrase — like ‘worried’ and ‘anxious’ — to describe their feelings towards their finances. And while money might be top of mind, many of us avoid talking about it.

For one reason or another, we feel uncomfortable discussing our finances. And it’s not just how much we earn, but what we choose to do with our money, how banks handle it, and the fees we pay for everything related to the process.

This silence isn’t just due to the social stigma around sharing your salary. Our survey found that 39% of Americans feel irritated or annoyed with their bank or banking services provider, and of that, 25% agree that it is because everything is so complicated. We don’t talk about how we manage our money because there’s a wide variety of complex terms and daunting disclosures that can feel too overwhelming to tackle at times.

At N26, we do things a little differently. We want you to feel confident every time you think about your money, and that confidence comes from understanding your finances from top to bottom. This is what the #BigBankingChat is all about.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to help you better understand confusing financial terms, debunk common money myths, and show you how to make your paycheck stretch a little further. By starting a conversation and asking questions, we hope to empower you to make smarter financial decisions and bank in a way that makes sense to you.
