Security is essential when it comes to online banking, and protecting your account and your private information is our top priority at N26. Knowing that your money is secure gives you the freedom to live and bank your way, and that’s what we’re all about.

While generally speaking using debit cards online with trusted merchants is relatively safe, there are things that you can keep in mind to protect yourself and your information even more.

Can I shop online with a debit card?

Absolutely. A debit card works just like a credit card when it comes to shopping online. You’ll enter your card number, expiration date, three-digit security code, and address. Unlike a credit card, with a debit card you aren’t borrowing any money to make the purchase — the charge will be deducted directly from your account. Is it safe to use a debit card online?

Yes. Rest assured that your information is safe whether you use your N26 card online, at a store, or at an ATM. With Visa’s Zero Liability policy,* you won’t be responsible for any unauthorized transactions that are made with your Visa debit card. This protects you if your card is ever lost, stolen, or fraudulently used. Learn more about N26 security.

How do I use a debit card online safely?

Whether you’re buying a new pair of shoes or paying your electric bill, there are several things you can do to make online shopping safer.

  • Shop on a trusted, secure e-commerce website. Whenever a web page asks you to enter your debit or credit card information, look to make sure that the address bar starts with “https” (instead of just “http”). There should also be a locked padlock icon nearby. An absence of either of these should be a red flag, and a sign that you are better off shopping somewhere else.

  • Choose secure connections for financial transactions. Try not to use public hotspots or free Wi-Fi to make purchases that require you to enter your debit card information. These connections are more easily hacked.

  • Avoid shopping from email links. You see an exciting deal in your inbox from an address you may or may not recognize, so you rush to make a purchase before checking things out in closer detail — and it turns out to be a scam. Many email links are safe to click, especially those from newsletters you’ve signed up to receive, but a few are fakes. Pay close attention to these types of links and emails.

  • Protect your PIN. Never write down or save your PIN, username, or password on your device. If your phone becomes infected with malware, this will increase your risk of being targeted by cybercriminals.

  • Monitor your account regularly. The N26 app makes it easy to keep track of your money with instant alerts on all account transactions, including purchases and withdrawals. If you notice a transaction that seems strange or unfamiliar, contact N26 immediately.

  • Update your software frequently. Manufacturers frequently issue updates to protect you against potential security threats. Keep all of your devices up-to-date, including laptops, phone, tablets, and any others you use regularly.

  • Trust your instincts. If a website feels shady or a deal seems too good to be true, take your time to dig a little deeper, and when in doubt, shop elsewhere.
