Tax season can be a stressful time. With many anxiously awaiting their refunds this year, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing global pandemic, any small delay can seem especially frustrating. Adding to everything, there are still questions surrounding the possibility of a third round of COVID relief payments, leaving millions of Americans wondering when they might receive some extra help this year.

At N26, we understand the importance of giving you access to your money right away, and that includes making sure your tax refund hits your account as quickly as possible. That’s why when you enter your N26 account information when filing your 2020 taxes, you can get your refund up to 2 days early¹ with direct deposit.

How can I get my refund faster?

How long it will take for you to get your tax refund will depend on a number of factors: whether you file electronically or mail a paper form, when you file your taxes, whether your return might take extra time to be reviewed, and of course, your preferred method of receiving your refund. We also understand that there are many ways to make a living, and depending on your employment situation, not everyone can expect to get a refund this year.

Of course, the sooner you file your 2020 taxes, the faster you’ll be able to get your tax refund. If you file electronically and choose to receive your refund via direct deposit, you’re more likely to receive your money quickly. And if you use your N26 account information when filing, we’ll release your funds as soon as they’re available to us, so you might get your refund up to 2 days earlier than you might with traditional banks.

Where do I find my account information?

Direct deposit is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get your tax refund. According to the IRS, 8 out of 10 taxpayers use e-file and direct deposit when filing. If you use tax software to file, all you have to do is select direct deposit as your preferred method to get your tax refund, and enter your account information and our routing number (122287675).

You can easily find your account details by tapping the “My Account” icon on the top right corner of the N26 app’s “Home” tab. From there, you’ll be able to copy your account information in just a few taps.

How early should I file?

Tax season officially starts on Friday, February 12, and so far, Tax Day (the official deadline to file your taxes) has been extended to May 17. How early you should file will depend on your personal situation. Filing early can help you get your tax refund more quickly, and in some cases, allow you to file a Recovery Reclaim Credit if you were eligible, but didn’t receive the full amount of the stimulus payments offered by the government. Filing early might also help protect you against tax fraud since those who have been victims of a stolen identity, might run into trouble when they submit their information if they wait too long.

However, you might want to consider when you file if you have a more complex tax situation, say if you’re self-employed, to give you enough time to maximize your deductions and get all your paperwork in order. You might also want to consider income eligibility for certain benefits, including future pandemic stimulus checks.

Where is my tax refund?

If you’ve filed your taxes, but don’t see your refund in your account, the first thing you should do is check the IRS’ “Get Refund Status” portal, as it will have the most up to date information about your return. This is especially important given than in certain cases, it might take the IRS longer to process your filing.

¹ Faster funding claim is based on a comparison of our policy of making funds available upon receipt of payment instruction versus the typical banking practice of posting funds at settlement. Fraud prevention restrictions may delay availability of funds with or without notice. Early availability of funds requires payor’s support of direct deposit and is subject to the timing of payor’s payment instruction.
